The three-time F1 champion\u2019s love for airplanes was no secret: from small model planes to the Brazilian Air Force fighter jets.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On September 1986, Senna made the best of a short break between races by visiting an aviation fair in England, the Farnborough Air Show.\u00a0 Still 26, the driver already received a champion\u2019s welcome.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ayrton visited the Embraer booth and saw several planes up close, such as the EMB 312 Tucano, the EMB 120 Bras\u00edlia and an AMX fighter jet. The Lotus drivers also talked to Embraer employees and gave autographs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senna has several other stories involving airplanes. Take a look back at some curious links between the driver and aviation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Tests with FAB fighter jets in 1987 and 1989<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ayrton Senna pilota um jato Mirage em An\u00e1polis - GO\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-84BtTqsUXY?start=121&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soon after the 1989 Brazilian GP, Ayrton Senna had the chance to fly in a machine that was even faster than his McLaren: a fighter jet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The driver was invited by the Brazilian Air Force to an exhibition flight in An\u00e1polis (Goi\u00e2nia), under the guidance of Lieutenant-Colonel Alberto de Paiva Cortes. Ayrton had already flown in a fighter in 1987, in Rio de Janeiro, when he was still at Lotus, but the second flight was covered by the press, including TV stations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Homage in a FAB fighter jet<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.senna.com\/ayrton-senna-e-homenageado-com-aviao-estilizado-da-forca-aerea-brasileira\/359474_877492_whatsapp_image_2019_05_06_at_11-27-19\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-22459\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22459\" src=\"https:\/\/www.senna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/359474_877492_whatsapp_image_2019_05_06_at_11.27.19.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.senna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/359474_877492_whatsapp_image_2019_05_06_at_11.27.19.jpeg 1280w, https:\/\/www.senna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/359474_877492_whatsapp_image_2019_05_06_at_11.27.19-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.senna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/359474_877492_whatsapp_image_2019_05_06_at_11.27.19-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.senna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/359474_877492_whatsapp_image_2019_05_06_at_11.27.19-768x576.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In honor of the 1989 flight and the 25<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary of Ayrton Senna\u2019s legacy, the Brazilian Air Force customized, in 2019, the Mirage 2000C flown by Senna.\u00a0The new design was based on the iconic helmet of the greatest driver ever.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The layout was created by Ra\u00ed Caldato and Alan Mosca, son of Sid Mosca, who was responsible for painting Senna\u2019s helmets ever since his go-kart days. The jet was unveiled in March 2019 in An\u00e1polis, and the event was attended by the driver\u2019s brother, Leonardo Senna, who had the chance to fly in another fighter, in remembrance of Ayrton\u2019s adventure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leonardo also represented the driver in other homage by FAB at the 43<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0Br\u00f3dio dos Jaguares, an award ceremony that took place in August 2019, also in An\u00e1polis, which gathered pilots of the 1<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0Air Defense Group, known as Jaguars, besides other honorees and guests. At the event, Ayrton received the title of honorary Jaguar, which is bestowed to members of the military or civilians who have contributed to the success of the Air Unit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.senna.com\/paixao-de-ayrton-senna-pelos-avioes\/dsc_8215\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-22657\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22657\" src=\"https:\/\/www.senna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/DSC_8215.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4000\" height=\"2666\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Model airplanes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of Ayrton\u2019s main hobbies was building and flying model airplanes. He used to spend his days off, especially when he was in Brazil, having fun with his miniature planes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senna\u2019s collection of model airplanes is stored exactly as the driver left it. Senna TV had exclusive access to it. The Brazilian company painted his iconic yellow helmet on the nose of an Embreaer E195 plane.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.senna.com\/um-mes-para-matar-os-20-anos-de-saudade\/aviao1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-20023\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-20023\" src=\"https:\/\/www.senna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Avi\u00e3o1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1000\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Visit to the Embraer factory<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On December 16, 1992, already a three-time champion, Senna visited the Embraer factory in S\u00e3o Jos\u00e9 dos Campos, in the S\u00e3o Paulo countryside. One of them was able to give him a gift: Giovani Morais offered Senna an \u201cS\u201d sculpted in fiberglass. The fan also took a picture with Ayrton, and the photograph ended up in several newspapers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the quick visit, Senna passed through the hangars where the AMB 110 Bandeirantes and the EMB 120 Bras\u00edlia were built. He also checked out the electronic systems of the AMX fighter jet and the CBA 123 plane.
