The McLaren driver won the pole position on Saturday with 1min21s314, beating Alain Prost\u2019s Ferrari by 10s462. It was Senna\u2019s fourth pole position in the Principality and his third one in a row.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span lang=\"en-US\">At the start, Senna kept the lead, but Prost and Berger crashed on the Mirabeau corner and the race had to be restarted. Since, at the time, drivers could take their spare cars after that type of incident, both drivers were back on the starting grid for the new start.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Take a look at the curious accident after the first start:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bKR6l5y4Bf0?feature=oembed\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span lang=\"en-US\">After the second green-light, Senna jumped ahead once again and put some distance between him and Prost, who was more worried about fending Jean Alesi\u2019s *Tyrell) and Berber\u2019s (McLaren) advances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span lang=\"en-US\">The French Ferrari driver was forced to retire on lap 31, with battery issues, and Senna\u2019s advantage over the driver in second place, Alesi, went up to 19 seconds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span lang=\"en-US\">After lap 66, Senna slowed down his McLaren, in order to preserve its Honda engine, and Alesi started gaining ground, especially because Berger was still after the second position.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-20357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.senna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/90MC_033.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2480\" height=\"1678\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.senna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/90MC_033.jpg 2480w, https:\/\/www.senna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/90MC_033-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.senna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/90MC_033-1024x693.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.senna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/90MC_033-768x520.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.senna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/90MC_033-1536x1039.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.senna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/90MC_033-2048x1386.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2480px) 100vw, 2480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span lang=\"en-US\">In the final lap, Senna crossed the finish-line Just 1s087 ahead of Alesi, and 2s073 ahead of Berger. It was the Brazilian\u2019s 22th win in F1.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span lang=\"en-US\">An interesting statistic made that triumph in Monaco even more special: since Ayrton won from start to finish and also posted the race\u2019s quickest lap (1min24s468, on lap 59), it was his third Grand Chelem in the category.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span lang=\"en-US\">It was also his third win at the Principality (1987, 1989 and 1990). After the race, the Brazilian explained why he slowed down his pace at the end of the race.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">\u201c<span lang=\"en-US\">I tried to preserve my tires and my car at the beginning of the race, but trying to keep some distance from my chasers. However, one third of the race in, I started having engine problems \u2013it was still working fine, but it was losing a little power and making a different sound.
